We apply the Wigner function formalism from quantum optics via two approaches, Wootters' discrete Wigner function and the generalized Wigner function, to detect quantum phase transitions in critical spin-12 systems. We develop a general formula relating the phase space techniques and the thermodynamical quantities of spin models, which we apply to single, bipartite and multi-partite systems governed by the XY and the XXZ models. Our approach allows us to introduce a novel way to represent, detect, and distinguish first-, second- and infinite-order quantum phase transitions. Furthermore, we show that the factorization phenomenon of the XY model is only directly detectable by quantities based on the square root of the bipartite reduced density matrix. We establish that phase space techniques provide a simple, experimentally promising tool in the study of many-body systems and we discuss their relation with measures of quantum correlations and quantum coherence.

A comparative study of pairwise quantum coherence, quantum and classical correlations is addressed for non-nearest spin pairs of the 1D Heisenberg spin-12 XX chain. Following the Jordan–Wigner mapping, we diagonalize the hamiltonian of the chain and we check this procedure numerically as well. Using the “Pauli basis expansion” formalism we get the pairwise quantities studied in this work at any distance. We then, show the role of quantum correlations in revealing quantum phase transitions, the robustness of quantum discord to the temperature and the dominance of quantum correlations over their classical counterpart in the magnetic and thermal interval in quantum spin chains. We conclude the paper by shedding light from a resource-driven point of view on the new born quantity “quantum coherence” where we discuss its role in detecting quantum phase transitions being a long-range quantity, and how it outclasses the usual quantum correlations measures in the robustness against the temperature, which indicates potential uses in the framework of quantum information processing.

The long distance entanglement in finite size open Fermi-Hubbard chains, together with the end-to-end quantum teleportation are investigated. We show the peculiarity of the ground state of the Fermi-Hubbard model to support maximum long distance entanglement, which allows it to operate as a quantum resource for high fidelity long distance quantum teleportation. We determine the physical properties and conditions for creating scalable long distance entanglement and analyze its stability under the effect of the Coulomb interaction and the hopping amplitude. Furthermore, we show that the choice of the measurement basis in the protocol can drastically affect the fidelity of quantum teleportation and we argue that perfect information transfer can be attained by choosing an adequate basis reflecting the salient properties of the quantum channel, i.e. Hubbard projective measurements.

This work introduces SpinGlassPEPS.jl, a software package implemented in Julia, designed to find low-energy configurations of generalized Potts models, including Ising and QUBO problems, utilizing heuristic tensor network contraction algorithms on quasi-2D geometries. In particular, the package employs the Projected Entangled-Pairs States to approximate the Boltzmann distribution corresponding to the model’s cost function. This enables an efficient branch-and-bound search (within the probability space) that exploits the locality of the underlying problem’s topology. As a result, our software enables the discovery of low-energy configurations for problems on quasi-2D graphs, particularly those relevant to modern quantum annealing devices. The modular architecture of SpinGlassPEPS.jl supports various contraction schemes and hardware acceleration.
