Modelling Large Scale IoT Networks based on Low Power Long Range (LoRa) Radio

The project is financed within the PL-FR PHC Polonium cooperation programme by NAWA

The main goal of the project is to exchange experience in the performance evaluation of LoRaWAN and to jointly study how to use a LoRaWAN network to collect data in a smart-city. In a sensor network without energy harvesting capability, the energy efficiency communication technology to trace the data to an aggregation site is paramount. A sensor will be unusable as soon as its battery is discharged. It is therefore important to study performance (especially throughput) and power consumption. The goal is to have a network of sensors operating for ten years or more. This requires not only a carefully designed communication protocol but also appropriate network planning and scheduling of data transmission.


The cooperation between the IITiS PAN and UVSQ will allow the development of novel, more accurate models and performance evaluation methodology for LoRaWAN. Thanks to the participation of IITIS PAN within the LoRa Alliance it has strong potential to prepare a contribution to standardization in the form of presentations and analyses presented during the LoRa Alliance workgroup meetings. It will allow also allow to prepare articles published in journals listed in JCR list, with high reachability due to the up to date topic of the research. Our goal is also to develop a joint Horizon Europe or COST proposal, which will allow us to continue the cooperation beyond the lifespan of the project.
